Connecting Culture and Health
Cardiologist Associate Professor Luke Burchill grew up on country, and was inspired by family to study medicine and work in a strengths and solutions-focused approach to Indigenous health.
Read how Luke, chair of the MACH Indigenous Health sub-committee navigates his identity as an Aboriginal man working in clinical care. He also explores the importance of Aboriginal liaison officers and healthcare workers in clinical settings to improve the strained relationship between Indigenous Australians and Australian Healthcare.
He shares how he is continually learning the need to exercising empathy by listening to patients and their stories which lead him to working on a video research project, funded by a University engagement grant, called A Full Life, which creates a safe space for patients to express themselves and for clinicians to engage more meaningfully, with space and time.
