VCHRI Value in Care – optimising surveillance COLonoscopy (VIC-COL)

This project aims to promote high-value use of colonoscopy in Victorian public hospitals. Colonoscopies are very important in the detection and treatment of bowel cancer, however, the procedure is sometimes carried out unnecessarily, too frequently, or not frequently enough in those who may benefit. The optimisation of colonoscopy use will reduce risks related to unnecessary procedures, reduce wait times for those who would receive benefit, and promote timely detection and treatment of bowel cancer. The project will involve co-design of interventions with the staff who provide colonoscopy care, guided by expertise from clinical leaders. The project team will support hospitals to implement interventions and monitor subsequent outcomes. Findings will inform optimisation of best practice across other non-urgent elective procedures.
