MACH Partners Secure 7 of 14 Victorian Medical Research

MACH partner hospitals and research institutes have been awarded with seven of this year's 14 Victorian Medical Research Acceleration Fund grants, it was recently announced.
The scheme, which aims to accelerate translation of health and medical research from the early stages to better patient outcomes and economic opportunities, provides $3M per year to fund proposals up to $500,000 each.
This year's winning cohort of projects from MACH partners include innovations in implantable technology and 3D printing at St Vincent's Hospital, digital tools at Murdoch Children's Research Institute, smart algorithms at the University of Melbourne, among others.
"MACH partners are national and international leaders in innovative health and medical research, and the depth of these successful proposals is another example of that," said Prof David Story, Interim Executive Director of the MACH.
Among the successful bids, a 3D printing project run by St Vincent's Hospital will aim to design and print jaw prostheses for Victorians affected by oral cancer; a dementia study led by the Florey Institute will work on early diagnostic tests for the debilitating disease; and the University of Melbourne will research methods to generate scaleable stem cell technology. Prof Story himself is leading a funded project on improving surgery outcomes after colorectal cancer - an issue affecting nearly 4000 Victorians annually.
